The programs and
curriculum at Junior Junction are designed to meet the
developmentally appropriate needs of the various age groups of
children. The school will provide a program balanced between
organization activities and free exploration. There will be
scheduled activities through the use of lesson plans, with
flexibility to allow for spontaneous special events. Child directed
and teacher directed activities are linked into the program. The
below information touches on the major areas of study, of course,
throughout the school year our teachers involve many different types
of learning experiences for our students. |
|
Language Arts
- Beginning at our preschool level through kindergarten, alphabet to
reading is a large part of our daily curriculum. We work both with
the phonics and whole language approach to reading. Our classrooms
are set up to experience group-shared reading along with assessing
individual reading needs of students. Spelling, writing and
penmanship are targeted more keenly as the child enters into their
kindergarten year.
Sign Language
- We feel it is important that children have an opportunity to
communicate in more than just oral speech. Therefore, we have
incorporated the introduction of Sign Language (Signing Exact
English, SEE) into our classes. The children learn quickly and began
signing soon into the first few weeks of school.
Social Studies
- Social studies becomes a greater focus as children enter our
kindergarten level. The study of people, lands and the world around
us will be woven into aspects of the program. An introduction to
customs and traditions of different lands will enlighten your
child's understanding of the world around them.
Art & Sensory
- Many expressions of art will be included in the program. Painting
3-dimensional, woodwork and sensory exploration are some examples. Children learn best by including all their senses, therefore, many
of our activities center around some type of art form. |

 |
Math & Science
- Fundamental concepts of science will be discovered through
hands-on exploration and experimentation. Mathematics Their Way, a
program created for the early childhood classroom, is presented to
Preschool through Junior Kindergarten students. This program takes
the abstractness out of math and creates it into a concrete
manipulative process children can relate to. Kindergarten grade
students will be using the curricula Everyday Math. This program,
created through the research at the University of Chicago School of
Mathematics, is being used all over the country, including our
neighboring school districts. It is proving to be an outstanding
program that allows students to go beyond arithmetic, to explore
more of the mathematics spectrum by investigating data and analysis
, probability, geometry, patterns, and algebra, just to name a few
topics.
Music - Music
is an essential part of the curriculum. It is used as a transition
tool from activities and a teaching medium to explain and direct.
Many traditional and contemporary children's songs become a daily
part of their classroom enjoyment.
Physical Fitness
- Activities to increase the students' motor strengths, eye/hand
coordination, balance and rhythm are included throughout the course
of the school year. We provided outside exercise time when the
weather permits.
